My favorite genre of gaming next to fighting, is without a doubt, first-person shooters. The immersion, violence, options, storytelling, and customization make it the closest one can get to a detailed experience constructed from the imagination of developers. Every decade, the industry pushes the boundaries of what it can unexpectedly introduce to a player’s world. I dare say that graphics mean very little if the art direction is purposeful. As a designer, rather than select which I find were the best, I’ve decided to list what titles stood out in terms of how much fun I had and breaking the mold of what I was used to of the genre. Enjoy!

10. SYNDICATE

“Set in the year 2069, the narrative revolves around Miles Kilo, a EuroCorp agent who must eliminate important personnel from rival corporations; in the process, he discovers the evil, secret practice used by EuroCorp to recruit agents.”

9. SINGULARITY

“The plot revolves around a mysterious island known only as “Katorga-12” where Russian experiments involving “E99″ (Element 99, which appears to be an equivalent to the actual element Einsteinium, which has no special properties like those referenced in the game), took place during the height of the Cold War era.”

8. BLACK

“The player assumes control of Jack Kellar, a black ops agent being interrogated about his previous missions involving a terrorist operation. Gameplay involves players confronting enemies by using firearms and grenades.”

7. URBAN CHAOS: RIOT RESPONSE

“You play as Nick Mason an Elite member of a super police force known as T-Zero. A gang known as the Burners have decided that they want control of the city, and will do whatever it takes to get their way.”

6. TIMESPLITTERS: FUTURE PERFECT

“The game features a single-player mode consisting of levels where the player assumes the role of Sergeant Cortez, a time-traveling marine from the 25th century, as he attempts to go to the past to save the future. The game also includes a range of multiplayer options, including cooperative gameplay during story mode.”

5. MACE GRIFFIN: BOUNTY HUNTER

“You play as Mace Griffin, one such bounty hunter with an ulterior mission. Mace wants revenge on those who wronged him. The world of Mace Griffin is filled with violence and danger. Mace’s ultimate goal may be clear, but the proper path to redemption must be found.”

4. BREAKDOWN

“An underground complex, known to humanity as Site Zero, has been discovered in Japan and seems to be the cause of increased earthquake activity. It was built by mysterious forces and is controlled by a being known as Nexus. A research facility is established to study the complex and its inhabitants, the T’lan.”

3. SOLDIER OF FORTUNE II: DOUBLE HELIX

“The theme of the Double Helix is germ warfare, as the mercenary Mullins and his new partner Madeline Taylor travel to Colombia to investigate a viral outbreak in a small town, only to link it to a shadowy organization called Prometheus.”

2. RAGE

“Rage is set in a post-apocalyptic near future, following the impact of the asteroid 99942 Apophis on Earth. Players take control of Nicholas Raine, a soldier put into hibernation in an underground shelter who emerges into the wasteland a century later, and finds himself a wanted man by an oppressive organization known as The Authority.”

1. FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS

“The Courier, the player character, was meant to deliver a package to New Vegas but they were intercepted by the Great Khans led by Benny, near Goodsprings. Benny steals the package, shoots them twice in the head, and leaves them for dead in a shallow grave. They are rescued by a robot named Victor, transporting them to nearby Doc Mitchell, who saves their life. After the Courier is given some medical tests, they enter the open world, and the quest Ain’t That a Kick in the Head begins.”
